Diocese of Norwich: Visitations: Processes etc.

  • DN/VIS
  • Fondo
  • 1555-1980

Up to 1686 the documents listed under this head consist of Consignation books and Visitation books which are not included in the series of those books listed separately (see DN/VSC and DN/VSB).

From 1686 there are, for most Visitation years, Visitation Processes which include Mandates to hold Visitations, Citations to appear etc., and, for some years, Presentments and proceedings thereon and Comperta books recording the further stages of proceedings for the correction of faults discovered or presented during a Visitation.

From 1777 the Visitation Papers consist mainly of printed Questions addressed to the incumbents of each parish. From 1813 these were accompanied by another series of printed questionaires or Articles of Enquiry addressed to the churchwardens, which were returned to the rural deans for those years when an episcopal visitation did not take place. These Questions and Articles were filed by deanery and have been listed alphabetically by Visitation Centre or Court. In 1837 the archdeaconry of Sudbury with the exception of the deaneries of Stow and Hartismere were transferred to the diocese of Ely.

Diocese of Norwich: Consistory Court Deposition books and files

  • DN/DEP
  • Fondo
  • 1499-1788

Depositions, informations, examinations and interrogatories brought to the bishop's Consistory Court. Typical causes involved such issues as breach of marital promises, the restitution of marital rights, and the examination of disputed marriages either through consanguinity or bigamy, along with the probate of wills, and other testamentary issues such as the authorization of nuncupative wills, the examination of additional will clauses, and disputes over unpaid legacies, or corrupt executors. Other societal issues such as slander (defaming another's good reputation or standing within the community) were tried at the Court. Sexual morality was also regulated by the Church, with causes concerning charges of adultery and fornication (pre-marital sexual activity) frequently being brought before the Court, and accusations of the same were often at the root of defamation causes. In addition, the Court heard causes relating to the defense of church rights and property, particularly issues such as the non-payment of tithes, the misappropriation of church goods, the dilapidation of benefice buildings, church chancels and glebe property and the rights to certain pews in local churches. Matters of heresy and irreverency against the church, its ministers and buildings, along with parishioners' non-attendance at divine service were all within the Court's purview. In addition, faculties and other licences were issued by the Court, including those regulating mid-wives and schoolmasters. Of course, the Consistory Court was also the body in which matters of clerical delinquency might be addressed. Immoral, drunken, schismatical, contentious or otherwise scandalous clergy could all be reported (by their parishioners and other observers) to diocesan officials, and if action was taken, it would be in the Consistory Court that their causes would be heard.

Diocese of Norwich: Diocesan Quinquennials

  • DN/QQN
  • Fondo
  • 1951-1990

Under the Inspection of Churches Measure, 1955, churches were to be inspected by a surveyor approved by the diocese within five years of the passing of the Measure and every five years thereafter. A quinquennial report was received by the diocese and the parish and can sometimes be found amongst the parish records and the records of the surveyor. Occasionally, a repair specification was drawn up at the time of the inspection and sent with, or instead of, the report. The Diocesan Advisory Committee is now responsible for the administration of these records.

Diocese of Norwich: Tithe Maps and Apportionments

  • DN/TA
  • Fondo
  • 1722-1958

Tithe maps and apportionments and related records created under the Tithe Commutation Acts of 1836 and later.
The map plots all the properties in a parish including any detached portions and each plot is numbered. Buildings are usually colour coded: red for dwellings, grey for outbuildings.
The apportionment records the owner, occupier, description, land use, acreage and titheable value of each plot subject to tithe. It is arranged alphabetically by owner. Later adjustments are recorded in Altered Apportionments which only cover the plots involved.
A copy of the map and apportionment was deposited with the Tithe Commissioners, the diocese and the parish. The Tithe Commissioners series was later transferred to the Public Record Office, where both the maps and apportionments were microfilmed. These microfilms were passed to the Norfolk Record Office in 1996.
Tithe payments were finally abolished in 1936.
