North Walsham Ecclesiastical Parish; ?-; North Walsham, Norfolk

Baptisms, 1557-1675; marriages, 1541-1664; burials, 1541-1666; and banns, 1653-1657

Births are given, 1650-1661, with a few for 1664-1670. Banns generally give the groom's occupation and the name of the bride's father and his occupation. They include many entries for people from villages near North Walsham, for whom banns were published in the town's market place; banns for North Walsham couples often include a note of the marriage. Banns entry for Thomas Blackson and Ellen Durrant, both of Antingham, on p. 223 notes that Anne Ames of Southrepps objected to the marriage, but afterwards retracted her opposition, 1655. Burials include the burial of Sir William Paston and of his lady, the body of the latter having been removed from Paston Church, 1610.
With memorandum on p. 191 that Robert Lubbocke was chosen to keep the North Walsham register, 1653.

Marriages, 1754-1812, and banns, 1754-1823

Includes notes of stamp duty paid on marriages, 1783-1785, 1789. Between the marriages and banns are papers relating to the publication of banns for John Hewitt and Mary Bachelor, 1780. (Mary had married a bigamist, William Pleasants (or Chilvers) of Bawdeswell in 1773, and in 1780, both Pleasants and his first wife were still living.) Includes a letter from the officiating minister at Bawdeswell, with marriage and banns certificates for William Pleasants, and letter from Richard Moss of Norwich, advising the vicar of North Walsham whether he might marry Mary Batchelor to Hewitt, 1780. For the vicar of North Walsham's draft letter requesting advice on this affair, see PD 711/28. The marriage of Chilvers and Mary appears in the North Walsham register for 1773, but there is no banns nor marriage entries for Hewitt and Mary in this register.
