This is a major collection of maps of Norfolk charting nearly 300 years of the county's geographical history. It gives a fascinating insight into Norfolk and the surrounding area's history and the profession of cartography when taken as a whole. The collection includes extremely rare maps, most notably some unusual maps in the form of playing cards, the best examples of which were produced by William Redmayne in 1676 (RFM 1/20/2) and John Lenthall in around 1717 (RFM 1/24/2).
Maps by cartographers of Dutch or Flemish origin are included, demonstrating the significance of the trading relationship between the county and the Low Countries. The works of well-known English map-makers such as John Speed, Robert Morden and Emanuel Bowen are also well represented.
