The Knyvett-Wilson Collection includes the archives of two families, the Knyvetts of Ashwellthorpe in Norfolk and the Wilsons of Didlington in Norfolk and Keythorpe, Alexton, and elsewhere in Leicestershire. The estates were united on the death in 1743 of Katherine, Baroness Berners, daughter of Sir John Knyvett, as a result of the marriage in 1720 of her kinswoman Elizabeth Knyvett of Ashwellthorpe and Henry Wilson of Didlington. The Knyvett papers had before this date passed into the hands of a kinsman Peter Le Neve (1661-1729), the herald and antiquary. He obviously then incorporated them into his own collections, adding a quantity of genealogical material (KNY 831-876). He also added Knyvett letters from the Gawdy Papers (KNY 928-938), and from his own personal papers (KNY 887-927). Papers of Lord Knyvett of Escrick (KNY 473-475, 482, 785-798) and of the senior branch of the family, the Knyvetts of Buckenham Castle (KNY 12-14, 429-30, 433-4, 445, 560, 812-815), may also have been added by him though some may have passed in the normal course of family business to the Ashwellthorpe Knyvetts. The papers were returned with his own additions to the family by Le Neve, perhaps for use as evidence in Lady Berners' successful peerage claim in 1720, with which he was concerned (see KNY 888-889) Other papers he retained and they were dispersed after his death; some, for example, he filed among the topographical collection known as the Frere MSS, now deposited in the Norfolk Record Office by the Norfolk Archaeological Society, and others are in the British Museum.
This collection comprises part only of the archives of the late Lord Berners. The residue relating to the Tyrwhit-Jones family of Shropshire was deposited in the Salop County Record Office.

Settled on marriage of Kenelm, son of Richard Reynoldes, in 1605 and later passed to the Fowler family. It was purchased in 1750 by Reginald Waters and, following mortgages, two closes were in 1783 sold by Revd John Davenport and his wife Mary (Waters' daughter) to William Wilson. Docs. include settlements, bonds, and other Fowler family documents of dates 1604-1741 and also - covenant by Thomas Allen and William his son to convey to Kenelm Allen another son after Thomas's death the estate at Goadby, on condition that William has estate at Marefield, 1551; conveyance from Kenelm Allen and son Kenelm to son Robert of yard and one oxgang in Goadby, 1571; conveyance from Anthony Collye, Esq., and Edward Heron, Esq., to Everarde Carter and William Allen of capital messuage and 4.5 yardlands in Goadby, excepting Goadby Brakes and lands enclosed in the Ould Feilde and Penclose, 1590.

Settled before marriage of Faith daughter of George Howes, gent., and Christopher Eyre clerk in 1707 and by them conveyed to Robert Wilson in 1726-1727.

Partitioned between the heirs of Brian Satterthwaite, gent., in 1715, part being conveyed for purpose of Common Recovery by Anthony Stoughton, gent., husband of Frances daughter of said Brian in 1730. Inc. copy of Stoughton-Satterthwaite marriage settlement also re property in Oundle (Northants.), 1703, and of will of said Brian, dated and proved 1713.

Purchased by Thomas Durrad, sen., and Thomas Durrad, jun., from Tobias Clarke and James Oades in 1715 and sold by John Sunderland and others to William Wilson in 1767. Inc. pedigree of Durrad's descendants between whom his property was divided, schedule of earlier deeds, copies of Act vesting estates devised by John Cogan, surgeon, in trustees, 1767, and mortgage deeds.

Deeds of annuity of £40 from the manors of Keythorpe, Tugby and Prestwold, granted by Mary wife of Thomas Digby, Esq., to George Digby in 1593 and by him to Sir Kenelm Digby's trustees in 1632
Deeds of similar annuity, granted by Mary Digby to her second son John and conveyed by Fulk Wyn, gent., to James Prescott in 1622 and by Wyn assured by final concord to Sir Kenelm Digby, Thomas Wayte and others in 1632.
Deeds of the manor house of Keythorpe and moiety of the manor of Keythorpe and lands (described) in Keythorpe and Tugby, in which Thomas Digby, Esq., and wife Mary surrendered their life interest to Sir Kenelm Digby in 1627, and he sold, with others, to Thomas Wayte, Esq., in 1632. By 1653 the estate had been acquired from the Waytes by Richard Wilson, gent., of London, in which family it remained until settled on Robert Wilson in 1717. Docs. include coloured exemplification of final concord of 1632, leases of the tithes payable on the estate, lease of 1656 of the estate to William Browne and Leonard Bradshawe, and mortgage deeds. A Wilson deed of 1653 relates also to a messuage in Swan Alley near Coleman Street, London.

In 1781 a recovery was suffered to the use of H.W. Wilson and Lieutenant Robert Wilson his oldest son and in 1857 Henry William Lord Berners conveyed the manor of Kirby Hall with the members of Hales Hall, Kirby Hall, marshes in Norton Subcourse, and farms etc. in Kirby Cane, Stockton and Ellingham to bar entails and vest the fee simple in himself. The estate was apparently sold in 1869. Docs. include copy of Will of Phillipa Leman spinster of Wenhaston (co. Suffolk), dated 1755 and proved 1757.
