The Harry Apling Collection

The Apling research collection contains a great deal of material which will be of interest to the general student of windmills as well as those in search of information regarding specific local mills.

Harry Apling; 1904-1990; historian, author; Essex, Hingham, Norfolk

Newscuttings 'from other sources'

Newscuttings (mainly twentieth century) relating to various English and European windmills (mainly Norfolk, arranged alphabetically by place). Harry Apling considered these to be separate from his 'own newscuttings' (see C/WT/1/1/1). The Wicklewood section includes a letter to Denis Wade (miller) from H.O. Clark (1929).

Main windmill catalogue

Harry Apling's own catalogue consisting of typed material 'in respect of around 850 windmills (arranged by parish) of which some record has been found'. The information is typed onto quarto size duplicating paper and the outside folder for each mill consists of a complete sheet folded in half with the fold uppermost. Other details are slipped within this on either full sheets folded or half sheets as required by each item. On the outside sheet details are given of the following under the initials:
PA. (Parish and address where necessary)
NGR (National Grid Reference - 8 figures if possible)
M. (Maps on which the Mill is shown)
OD (Ordnance Datum - appoximate height above Sea Level)
T. (Type of Mill)
DB. (Date built)
C. (Present condition)
The inner sheets contain information about the external details of each mill obtained either from the mills themselves or from photographs of them when in working order. Internal details are derived from what remains in the mill or as given in contemporary advertisements. Typical examples of these entries can be found in C/WT/1/12/1/1.
