System of arrangement
The papers had been stored in a semi derelict estate office at Gunton and their original order had been lost. The order of the catalogue is therefore a reconstruction, as far as practicable, based on Paul Rutledge's summary report on the papers for the Historical Manuscripts Commission, 1997.
