Born in Cornwall. Read History at the University of Lancaster, and trained for the ministry at Cuddesdon College, Oxford. Ordained in Peterborough in 1975. Team vicar at Welwyn Garden City. Worked at Church House, Westminster, where he oversaw the selection procedures for candidates for ordination in the Church of England. Chaplain to Robert Runcie, Archbishop of Canterbury, in 1987. Consecrated Bishop of St Germans in 1993. Enthroned Bishop of Norwich on 29 January 2000. Member of the Countryside Agency and Deputy Chairman of the Central Religious Advisory Committee (CRAC).
