Biographical history

Educated at the Norwich School and Brasnose College, Oxford (BA, 1907; MA, 1914, BD, 1944). He was ordained deacon in 1909 and priest in 1910. He served as curate of St Anne, Limeshouse, 1909-15; and St Paul's, Knightbridge, 1915-18. In 1918-19 he was a chaplain in the Royal Navy. He was a Fellow and Tutor of Merton College, Oxford, 1919-32 (Dean 1928-31); and University Lecturer in Patristic Studies, 1930-31. He was examining chaplain the the Bishop of Manchester, 1921-28, and to the Bishop of Southwark, 1929-50.\r\nAppointed a canon of Norwich Cathedral in 1931 and served as Treasurer 1934-37 and Vice-Dean, 1936-50. He retired in 1950 and died on 14 January 1953.
