Scope and content

On the 6 Jan 1928 gales and rough seas caused the fishing boat 'Mystery' to be lost resulting in the death of her four crew: Earl Massingham, Matthew James Smith, Percy Edward Smith and James Smith. A resolution of sympathy was passed at the next Town Council meeting (11 Jan) where it was proposed to open a fund and appeal for donations for the relief of the bereaved wives and families of the men. This was agreed and a small sub-committee was set up to administer the fund. On 10 Apr 1928 ?201 12s. 0d. was invested in National Savings Certificates and four books of 63 certificates each were created for the children of the deceased fishermen.
