Biographical history

Worked at Booton Hall Farm 1968-1972 (having moved from horticulture in Essex) when the farm was owned by Tom Sayer. Worked on a number of other farms across Suffolk and Essex, before studying for nine years at university, which led to a late career in conservation management.

Archival history

Printed off by NRO from digital images received by email. Field names were given to Mr Thompson when he worked on the farm 1968-72 by the other farm worker, Harry Chapman, who introduced him to the work of the farm. Mr Thompson wrote the names down and produced his own map, essentially to make sure that he was ploughing the correct field. Much later, he tidied it up to fit onto the computer. This was the first farm Mr Thompson worked on, from 1968 until 1972, having moved from horticulture in Essex. It was owned by a Mr Tom Sayer and in 1972 he retired and sold up to a Mr Tom Crane, when Mr Thompson and the other farm worker, Harry Chapman, had to leave the farm. The new owner bulldozed away all trace of the farm: fields, hedges, trees, as was agricultural practice at the time. After leaving Booton Mr Thompson worked on a number of other farms across Suffolk and Essex before studying for nine years at university, which led to a late career in conservation management.
