Scope and content

The inquisition having been held before commissioners, Sir James Hobart, Thomas Lucas and William Eyre. It recites that John, Duke of Norfolk had been seised of a messuage and 133a 1r of land and 1.5a of meadow, 10a of pasture, 30a of woodland with 7s, 6d of rents in Hethel and of 2 messuages, 120a of land, 4a of meadow and £4 of rents in East Carleton, and that by a charter dated 1 June 33 Henry VI [1455] he granted and confirmed these estates to John Selot, master, and to the fellows of the Hospital, but that the king's licence (to acquire lands by mortmain) was not then obtained. In the time of Master William Soper [elected 1504], the matter was subjected to the enquiry of a commission and the estates taken into the king's hands. It also recites that by letters patent of 6 April, 2 Edward IV, John Selot had been pardoned of any mortmain offences, but that this pardon had not extended to any other persons. However, this pardon had been shown to the Exchequer barons and by a writ of 1 May 21 Henry VII [1506], the king had confirmed and extended the pardon retrospectively and instructed the Exchequer to restore the estate to Master William Soper and to the Hospital.
