Biographical history

Ernest Neville-Rolfe entered the Royal Navy in June 1861. He was naval aide-de-camp to Sir Garnet Woolsey during the Ashanti War at the Battle of Amoaful in 1874. In 1876 he took part in operations up the Niger. He commanded the 'Euryalus' during the Egyptian War of 1882. He also commanded the naval brigade during naval and military operations in Sudan and was present at El Teb and Tamaai. He accompanied Admiral Sir W. Hewett on his mission to Abyssinia, when he was mentioned in naval and military despatches. For these services he was promoted to Captain and made a CB. He was promoted to Vice-Admiral in 1903 and gazetted Admiral in retirement in 1907. He married Janet Brand but the couple had no children.
