2nd Lt Ernest M. 'Ernie' Gavitt was born in Providence, Rhode Island (?-27 October 2008). Gavitt served as navigator with the Arnett Crew (crew no. 717) on board the B-24J 'Boomerang'(aircraft no. B-24J 44-40171) which was shot at near Brunswick, Germany, and forced into an emergency landing on the German-occupied Dutch coast, near Tuitjenhorn, Holland (Netherlands), 19 May 1944. Gavitt was captured and held as a prisoner of war at Stalag Luft III.
