Biographical history

Second daughter of Dawson Turner. In 1823 she married Francis Palgrave, whom Dawson Turner had required, as a condition of his consent, to change his name from Cohen to Palgrave, the maiden name of Turner's wife. The Palgraves had four gifted sons: Francis Turner Palgrave (1824-1897), anthologist and art critic, William Gifford Palgrave (1826–1888), traveller and diplomatist, Sir Robert Harry Inglis Palgrave (1827–1919), banker and economist, and Sir Reginald Francis Douce Palgrave (1829–1904), clerk of the House of Commons. Elizabeth travelled extensively with her husband, using her considerable artistic talents to illustrate her travel journals.
