Administrative history

Part of the abbey holdings before the Dissolution, (the abbot had a country house here), later owned by the Wodehouse family of Kimberley Hall. Before the Dissolution it was part of the manor of Wymondham Abbey, afterwards it passed to the Crown and then to the Cotton family. In the early seventeenth-century the Thorntons and then the Burtons acted as lords, perhaps as lessors. In 1666, Sir John Cotton released all his rights in the manor to Sir Philip Wodehouse, who was then in actual possession [NRO, KIM 21/2]. It then descended with the other manors and estates of the Wodehouse family.
One of the 13 manors in Wymondham mentioned in the Inclosure Act/Award of 1806-1810; Lord Wodehouse is named as lord in the Act of 1806 [NRO, C/Sca2/345; MC 2907/14].

The Earl of Kimberley is given as lord of Downham manor in White's Trade Directory, 1883.
