Name of creator
Born on 5 September 1861. Eldest surviving son of Jeremiah James Colman, who was mayor in 1867, and Caroline. Wife Edith Margaret, daughter of Richard Davies of Treforth, Anglesey, who he married in 1888. They had two sons and two daughters, their elder son, Captain Geoffrey Colman, died 1935 from wounds received in the First World War and the younger son, Alan Colman was killed on active service in 1943 when he serving as a pilot in the A.T.A. Mayor in 1901. Educated at Amersham. Partner of J. & J. Colman. Sheriff in 1893, magistrate for Norwich and Norfolk, high sheriff of Norfolk in 1904. H.M. Lord Lieutenant for Norfolk, 1929-1944. Chairman of the county council, 1925-1941. Chairman of the Yarmouth Port and Haven Commissioners for 24 years. High steward for Great Yarmouth in 1930. Honorary freeman of the borough in 1942. Entertained the King and Queen in Norwich in 1938 on the completion of the City Hall. Honorary freedom of Norwich in 1938. His benefactions to Norwich include the Norwich Colman Library, and the Colman Gallery at the Castle Museum. Died on 22 March 1946.
