Biographical history

Born in Norwich. Son of John Staniforth Patteston, who was mayor in 1823, and Anne Elizabeth Patteson. Grandson of the founder of the Pockthorpe brewery. In 1850 he married Isabella Katherine, eldest daughter of Revd John Partridge, rector of Baconsthorpe. Son was Colonel Henry Tyrwhitee Staniforth Patteson. Mayor in 1862. Joined the brewing firm of Steward, Patteson, Finch & Co. in 1832. Trained in malting techniques for 2 years in Bishops Stortford. Sheriff in 1858, and Deputy Lieutenant and magistrate in 1859. Became leader of the Norwich Conservatives in 1895. Active in the Church of England Young Men's Society. A director of the Norwich Union Fire Office from 1842, becoming its President for the last 20 years of his life. Also director of the General Hailstorm Society, and chairman of the Norwich Waterworks Co. and Governor of King Edward VI School, and involved in various charities.
