Scope and content

Accounts of chamberlains: William Kyng and Robert Hoo for part-account of [19-20 Edw IV-1479-80] and 20-22 Edv IV [1480-82], Thomas Swayn and Thomas Barly, 22 Edw IV - 2 Rich III, 'after the deaths of the Lord Edward and of his son, Edward' [1482-1484], Nicholas Cowlynge and Thomas Swayn, 2 Rich III - 1 Hen VII [1484-85], Robert Machon and Nicholas Cowlynche (part only- but see below), 1-2 Hen VII [1485-86], Robert Machon and John Atmere, (incomplete) 2-3 Hen VII [1486-87] and William Gogeon and Robert Machon, 2-4 Hen VII [1487-88].

The accounts are collected together in this volume, probably at a later date. Several accounts survive only in part. There is much damage sustained throughout, but especially in the first half of the volume. Early repairs often obscure sections of surviving text. After the main receipts and payments accounts, the 'onus' or charge summarises the main heads and can supply the date of preceding accounts where the latters' main headings are missing. On folios 37-42, between the account for 1481-82 and that for 1482-83 is the payments part (starts part-way through the 'fees and wages' section) of an unidentifed account, but reference to Mayor Thomas Bewfeld dates it to c 1488. It seems likely that this is the discharge part of the 1487-88 account in this volume, and that the discharge currently at the end of the volume on folios 92-97, with references to Mayor Hamon Claxton and to sherrifs, John Tillys and John Swayn, actually relates to the account of 1485-86, which, tellingly, has no discharge section.

Machon and Atmere's account [1486-87] includes a detailed schedule of assize rents, arranged by ward and parish, taken in Mm 1485.

Where the head of each account survives, the names of (usually four) auditors are given above the account.

Physical characteristics and technical requirements

Half rough-calf and cloth-bound paper volume of 97 folios. Boards loose, old water damage to textblock, with the top parts of the first surviving 27 folios missing and repaired with pieces of cartridge paper stuck across those parts of the folios, partly obscuring still extant text. Much water-staining disfigures much of the textblock.
