Nom du producteur

(1887-1965)

Notice biographique

Born in King's Lynn in 1887. He became a land agent and worked in Norfolk until 1935 when he was appointed managing director of Hammond's brewery in Yorkshire. He was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1924 and published a number of works connected with the history and archaeology of Norfolk. From his youth, he was an avid collector of books and manuscripts. His successful career as a businessman enabled him to make substantial purchases from the leading London dealers, and to build up a massive and important collection by the time of his death in 1965. According to his wishes, his executors deposited those manuscripts relating to Norfolk in the Norfolk Record Office in 1967, a similar gift of his Yorkshire manuscripts being made to the Yorkshire Archaeological Society at the same time. Died 1965.

Nom du producteur

(early 17th century-1991)

Notice biographique

The Hamonds were a gentry family settled at South Wootton by the early 17th century and granted arms in 1698, whose rise into prominence in the County was marked by the purchase by Richard Hamond (1709-1776) of the Westacre Estate, with the newly-built High House, from the impoverished Spelman family in 1761. They remained at High House until 1898, dispersing thereafter to Westacre Abbey, Twyford Hall, Morston and elsewhere. The nephew and heir of the purchaser was Anthony Hamond (1742-1822), Sheriff of Norfolk, 1792-1793, whose soubriquet 'Rabbitskins' was earned through rabbit farming and perhaps his willingness to prosecute for petty theft. His son Philip (1782-1824) outlived his father for only two years but Philip's son Anthony (1805-1869) took a leading role in the County both as a Liberal politician and an agriculturalist. Later members of the family included Charles Annesley Hamond (1856-1914), the naturalist, and Anthony Hamond (d 1991).

Portée et contenu

Contains documents of title relating to estates in Bawsey, Leziate, Congham, South Wootton, Tilney, etc., belonging to the Hamond family of Westacre, and papers relating to their wills and family settlements. They were acquired by H.L. Bradfer-Lawrence from several different sources. The Congham title deeds came from Archer & Archer, the King's Lynn solicitors, and so presumably did the Congham manorial records in BL/MA 1. The Bawsey and Leziate title deeds which relate to land sold to R.L. Bagge in 1911 must have come from Gaywood in the early 1930s after the death of Sir Reginald Bagge. Most of the correspondence about wills, settlements and estate matters comes from the archive of the solicitors Whincop & Lane, and was acquired by Bradfer-Lawrence from their successors, Archer & Archer.
