Biographical history

Born in King's Lynn in 1887. He became a land agent and worked in Norfolk until 1935 when he was appointed managing director of Hammond's brewery in Yorkshire. He was elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1924 and published a number of works connected with the history and archaeology of Norfolk. From his youth, he was an avid collector of books and manuscripts. His successful career as a businessman enabled him to make substantial purchases from the leading London dealers, and to build up a massive and important collection by the time of his death in 1965. According to his wishes, his executors deposited those manuscripts relating to Norfolk in the Norfolk Record Office in 1967, a similar gift of his Yorkshire manuscripts being made to the Yorkshire Archaeological Society at the same time. Died 1965.

System of arrangement

It was necessary to make a catalogue as quickly as possible for probate purposes following Bradfer-Lawrence's death.. Accordingly, a shelf list was made, in many cases using the titles from Bradfer-Lawrence's own box files and leather-bound boxes. The volumes and boxes were assigned a Roman numeral relating to the shelf-unit on which they were stored, followed by a letter for the shelf, followed in some instances by a sub-number. The descriptions were then resorted by place or by archival sub-group to create a searchroom finding aid. Many of the descriptions were revised following more detailed work on some of the boxes, and extra sub-numbers were introduced.

On 1 August 1994, the Central Library building in Norwich, which also housed the Norfolk Record Office, suffered a disastrous fire. No records were lost from the Record Office, but parts of the Bradfer-Lawrence collection were among those damaged by water. Many of the boxes lost their original titles, which inevitably led to some confusion in the re-identification of similarly described items. The whole collection was re-boxed following the original sequence as far as possible, and, where necessary, conservation work has been carried out. More recently (since 2008), the collection has been substantially re-catalogued and new reference numbers allocated to the documents. However, the old (often imprecise) references, which have been extensively cited over forty years, have been included in the 'Arrangement' field of the catalogue, e.g., Formerly BL VIa/XII.

A small number of documents in the archive, including DCN 44/76/3, were catalogued with the records of the Dean and Chapter of Norwich. They are identifiable by Bradfer-Lawrence's handwriting and references.

Numbers not used- BL/BC 5/1, BL/MD 25/7/21, BL/MD 37/14, BL/MD 40, BL/MD 42, BL/MD 53/12, BL/SL 5/8, BL/Y 1/27
