The collection was temporarily deposited at the Norfolk Record Office on 11 January 1974 and on 5 March 1974 and then withdrawn on 15 May 1996. Whilst the collection was held at the Norfolk Record Office an interim list was completed and forms the basis of this catalogue. The collection was then deposited at the Norfolk Record Office on 5 January 2000. Some discrepencies have therefore occurred between the collection as described in the interim list and the collection as described in this catalogue.

Scope and content

The collection of title deeds and associated papers relate to an estate primarily in Swaffham and Mattishall. The estate came from two main sources. The lands in Swaffham were bought by members of the Bodham family from the mid 17th century to the mid 18th century. The lands in Mattishall were acquired by Thomas Bodham's marriage to Mary Chamberlayne, only child of Colvy Chamberlayne. Documents which relate to property in Swaffham acquired by the Bodham family is listed as MC 2179/1-6 (1499-1752), documents relating to property acquired by the Chamberlayne family mainly situated in Mattishall is listed as MC 2179/7-21 (1571-1854). MC 2179/22-26 (1690-1921) relate to documents concerned with the whole Bodham estate and to other Bodham family papers. MC 2179/27-31 (1663-1869) relate to lands not held by the Bodham family and to miscellaneous material.

System of arrangement

The contents of bundles and the order of those bundles has been kept as close as possible to the order as described in an interim list which was prepared when the collection was deposited at the Norfolk Record Office on a temporary basis. When preparing the final list it was not possible to identify any original order inherent in the collection.
