Scope and content
Files of previously folded proforma recognizances guarded and bound in volumes in the 1930s. The volumes are divided into sections, each representing a city parish or hamlet and the recognizances in each parish are filed alphabetically by the sign. Each parish section is preceded by a typescript, contents list of signs, years (when sureties were taken) and licensees' names and occupations. The recognizances are bonds entered into each year by alehouse/inn keepers to be granted licences. Each recognizance was autographed by the authorising magistrates (often the mayor and a fellow justice). These volumes appear to consist of recognizances from certain years only within the above covering dates. Represented are bonds from 1760-1764 and from 1806-1807. Two papers from the 1824 sessions also appear (in volumes 1 and 5).
