Historia biográfica

Daniel Ames (1775-1852) a stationer, married Mary Buckingham (1774-1865) of Long Stratton in 1797. The couple had six children, of whom five survived infancy. By 1837, the family were living at Lakenham Cottage, also known as Crowe's Cottage, next to Old Lakenham Church. The house had a particularly fine garden, which is frequently mentioned in the letters. In 1843, the Ames family moved to Willow Place, also in Lakenham. Mary Ames and her children attended the Ebenezer Chapel in Lakenham, which belonged to the Methodist New Connection, whilst Daniel was a member of the Society of Friends.

The two elder sons, Daniel Fletcher Ames and Joseph Watson Ames, had emigrated to America by 1837. Joseph married Ann Durham in 1837, but their sons died in infancy and the couple eventually separated. Daniel, an artist and engraver, also married in America and had five children. Charles Fuller Ames joined his two brothers in America in 1840. He was the youngest son and had worked with his father in the stationery business for a time, but left England because prospects were poor in his native country.

Mary Parkinson Ames (1810-1891), the elder daughter, married Revd Archibald Thompson (1805-1891) in May 1837. Archibald had been born in North Shields, but his vocation as a minister of the Methodist New Connection meant that he was sent to circuits all over the country. Following their marriage, Archibald and Mary lived in Shrewsbury May 1837-December 1838; Chester December 1838-June 1840; Sheffield July 1840-June 1842; Tipton, Staffs. July 1842-February 1843; Stalybridge, Manchester March 1843-1845; and Thorne, Yorks. 1845-1847. In 1857, they settled at Brandon, County Durham, when Archibald became a cashier at a colliery there. The couple's first two sons died in infancy, but another son, William Daniel, and three daughters, Mary Elizabeth (b. 1841), Annie and Priscilla, survived to adulthood.

Elizabeth Buckingham Ames (1813-1894), the younger daughter, was living with her parents at Lakenham during the period of most of the correspondence, but in 1867 she married Deacon Markley.
