History

The 31st Field Brigade Royal Artillery was raised in Norwich in 1936. Sent to Egypt, the Brigade became the 31st Field Regiment Royal Artillery in 1938, forming part of the 4th Indian Division. After the outbreak of the Second World War, the Regiment saw action in Egypt and Eritrea. In 1941, it fought in the desert war in Libya and was nearly destroyed at Alem Hamza. Re-built in Cyprus during 1942, the Regiment went on to fight in Tunisia and Italy 1943-1944 and was sent to Greece at the end of 1944, to help maintain peace between the monarchists and communists. The Regiment was dispersed in 1946. A descendant of one of its batteries, the 42 Light Air Defence Battery RA, (part of the 22nd Regiment Royal Artillery, Welsh Gunners) was awarded the title 'Alem Hamza' some years after the war, in honour of the gallant stand made by the Regiment in 1941. In November 2002, however, it was announced that the 22nd Regiment Royal Artillery was to be disbanded.\r\nThe Old Comrades Association was formed in 1987. Annual reunions were held until it was wound up in 2000. A regimental history, '31st Field Regiment RA: a Record', was published by the Association in 1994. The profits from the sale of this volume were used to purchase memorials to those members of the Regiment who were killed during the war: a prayer desk and collection plate for the Garrison Church at the Royal School of Artillery at Larkhill, Wiltshire and a tree for the grounds. These were dedicated at a service in 1998.
