Administrative history

Inquisitions post mortem provide information on the tenant-in-chief of the manor: Robert son of John de Thorp died in possession in 1331, John was his son and heir [IPM 1:7/296]; an inquisition held in 1486 found that Henry Straunge Esq. had held the manors of Berfordes and Castell in Anmer of the heirs of Frederick Tylney. Roger was his son and heir [IPM 2:1/24].
The Coldham family acquired it around 1700. Henry Waller Coldham, Esq., is given as lord of the manor in White's Trade Directory (1845). Henry James Coldham, Esq., is given as lord of the manor in White's Trade Directory (1883).
